Escalante to Torrey

We left Escalante Friday afternoon (March 17th) and marvelled at the carpet of purple flowers that cover many of the fields surrounding the town. We are starting to see trees bloom as well.
Spring has sprung in Escalante!

We got back into snow within 1/2 hr of Escalante

"If it ain't at least 10% grade, it ain't Utah!" (says John)

The road from Escalante to Torrey is a study in elevation changes.  We climbed to the best ever lookout (previously commented on), went down into the canyons and then had to climb back out again – to a summit of 9,600 ft!!!

John says it was the steepest grade that we’ve ever been on with this truck and trailer.  The truck was certainly working to capacity.  He also said that if there were more digits in the display on the truck, we would have been using more than 100 L of gas per 100 kms climbing up the hill.  Gotta love those 14 percent grades!

We finally finished our Scenic Drive on Highway 12!  Not surprisingly, the byway finished off with the same amazing views that we’ve come to expect from that highway. After all, it started out in Red Canyon… and went through Bryce Canyon and ended just shy of Capital Reef.  A very stellar line up of scenery!

So sorry to see Scenic Byway Hwy 12 end...

This is the most amazing scenic drive we have ever seen.  We have thoroughly enjoyed it – for 4 days!

We’re in Torrey, UT now and will explore the Capital Reef National Park.  The wifi is patchy, the cell service is non-existent, and what can we say? … we’re in the desert, in canyon country, in Utah…
